To level the chances of winning of a contestant on any given sports, professional bettors use sports handicapping method to be able to decide which of the contestants to bet on. This method uses scoring compensation by assigning an advantage to one side or any given advantage to determine the chances of winning of a certain competitor. This can also apply to similar methods used by which advantages and disadvantages are all calculated in relation to the player.

Handicapping in sports may also refer to methods or practices used by professional bettors and sports enthusiasts or spectators to quantify or predict the results of the competition. This method is also utilized to bet against the spread points. Spread points is the variety of wagers placed on the event's outcome where the winning bet is based on the accuracy of the wager not just a simple win or lose system. A spread is a variety or range of possible outcomes in the sporting event and the bet placed is whether the outcome will be below or above the spread.

The purpose of the spread points is to make an active betting market for both sides of the coin. In other words, even if before the event the outcome is already leaning towards the other contestant, wagers would still be placed due to its many variants. For example in a basketball competition, there are always instances where a stronger team is match with a very weak

team.

Therefore outcome is already predicted to be in favor of the stronger team making then the heavy favorite, and the weaker team will be the underdog. If the wager is simple as to which team will win, then more bets will be placed on the stronger team to an extent that only a few will bet on the underdog. When this happens, it is quite impossible for the bettors of the favored team to have their money doubled when their team wins, because there is no money to match their bets on the other side.

With the spread method, varieties of wagers are available such as the favored team will win by 10 points, or they will win by 20 points, and so on and so forth. This way, bettors have more choices and they can bet against each other even if they are rooting for the same team.

When it comes to horse racing, handicapping is more focused on the contestants, in this case the horse. Factors that are considered to handicap a horse race include speed of the horse, pace of the horse, the horse's form, the class of the horse, the horse's jockey, and the weather, weight, and the track condition.

Understanding these ways of handicapping should give you more idea when friends of yours who are into betting talks about this topic. This way, you will be able to relate to their conversation and provide useful insights as well.
