Chances are, you have never considered shipping your auto before now, and are overwhelmed by the prospects of choosing a company. There are some steps to take in locating the right company for you that will help you in this process.

Perhaps the first thing to observe while doing your comparison shopping is how willing they are to show you their insurance policy and explain the coverage. If the company does not insure their cargo, or will not offer proof, scratch them off your list. They may seem upstanding but if they are not insured, they probably cannot afford it; a very bad sign. They could be embroiled in legal issues or just simply operate their business very badly and are looking for another sucker to fleece before they close their business. Don't be that sucker. This could be just another example of someone who wanted to be an entrepreneur, but had no idea how to run a successful business.

You want not only a decent company, but a company prosperous enough to offer you several insurance policies you could buy before signing a contract. Depending on what your own current insurance covers, choose between primary or excess insurance. Excess insurance covers what your personal current policy omits. Primary insurance acts independently of your current personal policy. The company should be willing to describe the types of accidents and damage are likely in the case of your car and should help you decide how best to secure it against theft and significant damage.

Now that this step has been completed, you are ready for the next phase; that of deciding which method of transport is best for you. There are two main types of carriers:

open and closed, with the open being the most common and most visible. The open carriers are more popular because they cost less than the closed container type. In fair weather and over long distances, the open carrier is good choice and offers prompt shipment.

Container shipping is the usual method by sea. As mentioned previously, closed carrier trucks cost more than the open carrier and most companies will wait for a fully loaded container truck before shipment. What this means to you is you will have to wait for your car to be shipped unless you pay extra fees for earlier delivery.

The closed carrier truck transport will cost you more. Also, there can be delays in shipment as this type of carrier will not begin its journey until it is fully loaded. You can get earlier shipment but it will cost you excess fees. The closed carrier does offer protection against inclement weather, flying road debris and theft or vandalism. If your car has to travel a long distance or if it is a rare, expensive, or fragile vintage model, it is worth protecting your investment by choosing the closed container truck.

Companies, that is, good companies, offer insurance for every shipped vehicle: any damaged while the car is handled by the company will be compensated. Moreover, they arrange for liability insurance of at least $800, 000 which covers damage to large numbers of cargo. No business company worthy of its name finds it profitable to mishandle or endanger the property of their clients. They make sure you are insured. Beware of fishy organizations which even so much as hint at reluctance to offer adequate insurance or neglect to mention it.
