Puppies bite, you have only to watch a litter of pups to see this. They also have fewer nerves than we do and can stand a lot more pain. However when they do feel pain they are not afraid to voice it when one of their siblings gets too rough. This is a technique a master can use too (in other words make a crying sound when a bite is too hard) as part of their training; combined with other techniques it has the ability to stop a puppy from continuing biting.
A puppy needs to be taught how to control their biting from an early age. If left biting can create serious problems later on. Biting dogs are dangerous.
As with all training it should never encompass hitting, smacking or any other physical punishment. Apart from the risk of hurting your pet this behavior will only serve to create behavioral problems such as aggression in the puppy and later in the adult dog.
The first thing to figure out is the reason for biting. Often a puppy will bite excessively as a defense mechanism or in reaction to pain or illness. If biting is a natural part of the puppy's behavior it is easier to rectify.
While it is natural for puppies to bite as a means to explore their environment and while most will outgrow it, persistent or aggressive biting will require training. If you have small children, biting should not be tolerated. With the correct training biting can be eliminated.
Careful attention must be given a puppy in order to discourage biting.
Training should start as early as possible and must take into account the age of the puppy. Puppies are very social and your habits and behavior will affect how they act. If they feel they may be losing their playmate they will change their behavior.
Repetition to training is crucial; the more attention you put into their training the quicker you will see results. Reinforcement is also important. Good behavior should be rewarded with lots of praise and love. Biting on the other hand should never encompass punishment other than that laid down in training techniques.
If their behavior does not improve however, it may be necessary to investigate the physical or mental health of your puppy.
Training Techniques
There are many effective training techniques. Finding one or a few are key to instilling correct behavior. The key is consistency and control. A puppy that is smacked will in turn react by biting. Shouting may also encourage bad behavior.
Anti-biting techniques are most effective for some owners and dog breeds while others find that a time out works for them. Training can encompass anything from withholding attention to providing a puppy with a special toy. Socialization training may also benefit a puppy while other puppies benefit most from a good diet and consistent exercise.
However whatever training is undertaken, it should be done with patience and understanding. A puppy's training should start early. As they grow older their biting can get more serious to the point where it is impossible to correct. They need to be taught good manners from the day they are brought home.
