Whenever someone that lives in a city which is large, they quickly realize that they have a lot of different options when it comes to finding a courier company that can adequately fulfill their needs. Basically, the options can be broken down simply into two major categories. The small courier, messenger, delivery, and 3pl providers which are locally owned and operated and the giant international courier companies like FedEx.
It can be difficult to know which of these companies is going to provide you better service unless you understand the differences between them. In fact, it is far less about knowing which of these types of companies is better, and more about knowing which is going to fit the needs of your business more exactly instead.
A company like FedEx has its primary strength in its reach. If you need to ship internationally, using a company like this is a very logical option because they have offices in almost every country in the world, and in almost every major city. If you're trying to grow your business to that scale as well, it makes sense to do business with a courier that is set up on the same level. Otherwise, when you use
a smaller local courier they always end up having to use a company like FedEx whenever you're shipping to more exotic locations anyway, so it makes more sense to cut out the middleman.
The strength of the local courier company lies more in its ability to work within the local area. They know the city better because this is where their business is focussed completely. As well, as an organization with fewer employees they will get to know you better the longer you work with them, and it is easier to form a real business relationship with a smaller company. For a small company that prefers doing business in this way, this can by far be the better option.
There are also differences in prices that reflect each courier's area of expertise. FedEx is likely to be able to offer you better pricing when you're dealing with large international shipments, or when you're shipping in enormous volume. On the other hand, when you're shipping locally and small packages are your bread and butter, you may be able to get a better rate from your local courier, especially if you open an account with them and ask for some kind of corporate discount.
