As the weather improves by getting warmer and days longer, try to encourage family members to get away from the tube and explore the outdoors by creating some fun activity to motivate them. You could start by planning some adventure activities and why not take a backyard safari, put up bird watch stations across the yard, plan a nature walk or go treasure hunting.
Prior to your adventure, get some supplies ready:
Binoculars - home made - this device is mandatory to an explorer; it's made by using two toilet paper rolls and some lenses.
Camera - important to help you document your adventures
Mats - this is for sitting on when out touring.
Treasure Bag - the best is the jumbo treasure sack with a shoulder strap for holding treasures found when exploring.
First Aid Kit - very important incase of an accident when touring.
Notebooks/laptop computers - a portable computer is important for taking notes when out in the field.
Here are adventure ideas to get you started. Feel free to share any adventure ideas you may have.
For a backyard safari, put up a safari tent using blankets, picnic table or plastic chairs.
Engage your creative selves by creating sidewalk chalk where kids can draw.
Safari Charades - you can do this by feigning the identity of an animal likely seen in a safari and ask others to try and identify you.
Make creative cookies. This can be designed in the form of snakes and other wild animals.
Pretend that you're watching
wild animals in the neighborhood, Pretend that the cat is a ferocious lion and the dog a coyote.
Craft the wild animals from paper.
Create a mock paper trail of wild animals crossing a river, hunting, or grazing in the savannah.
Paint picture of wild animals to color.
Bird watching
Locate a nice spot where you can sit and do bird watching. Count the birds and document them in your notebooks. Draw and color pictures of the various birds you see and print the pictures out then compare them to real birds.
Play with your imagination by inventing birds, draw them, and write information on what the birds eat, lives and the kind of nests it lives in.
Try creating bird nests for your invented birds.
For nature walk, the following activities will serve you well.
Visit a park nearby, or a wilderness, be careful not to interfere with anything in nature. Avoid picking flowers, breaking tree branches or anything that might affect the ecosystem.
Plan and play a scavenger hunt game, avoid littering.
Educate yourselves on fossil collecting.
Collect insects, good if you've already taken time to familiarize yourselves with insect collecting
Carry your notebooks and try to take notes on the type of the bugs you encounter, you can even write stories about the bugs.
Create insect watering hole. Bug collecting is both fun and informative because it helps you learn more about nature and other mysteries of the universe. It provides a unique opportunity for kids to expand their knowledge base.
