All of us are born spiritually blind and therefore unable to differentiate between things of this world compared to the things of eternity. So, we spend all our time and energy in seeking worldly wealth, worldly honors, and pleasures that the world offers us.

The world we live in today gives us all, without exception, a depraved sense of values, and under this influence, we all tend to get our life priorities woefully wrong. As a result, today's society is sinking deeper and deeper into the quagmire of moral decay and corruption.

The sole light in this ever increasing darkness around us, offering us a lifeline to drag us out of this situation, is the Holy Bible. When we turn to the Holy Scriptures, we will discover for ourselves what the prior claims upon a good Christian life really are.

We find that Jesus challenged the wrong sense of values held by even religious people of His days, by telling them that a man would profit nothing who gained the whole world if in doing so he lost his soul!

The Holy Bible tells us how Jesus was always removing the spiritual blindness from the eyes of those who came in contact with Him, and teaching them what life's priorities really are.

For instance, when Jesus was a guest of Martha and her sister, Mary, He pointed out to Martha that "there is need of only one thing." (Lk 10: 38 - 42)

Martha was hustling and bustling around her kitchen, preparing a meal for Our Lord and His disciples, while Mary was sitting quietly at the Lord's feet, listening to Him preaching. Martha was angry that Mary was not helping her and complained to Jesus. But, He rebuked her and said that Mary was doing the right thing.

Martha, here, is like every good Christian who has received the Lord into his heart, and is unselfishly seeking to serve the Lord and

other fellow Christians. Yet, the reason why Jesus rebuked her lies in those seven words: "There is need of only one thing."

On the other hand, Mary was doing the only one thing needed by every good Christian. She was sitting quietly at Jesus' feet, listening to His Word. It is clear from this that Martha wasn't rebuked for her service, but because she didn't get her priorities right.

So, our first priority, as good Christians, is to spend quality time each day, sitting at the Lord's feet, reading His Word, and seeking to hear Him speaking to us through the Holy Scriptures.

On another occasion, when a rich, young man came to Him eager to follow Him, Jesus was touched by the young man's sincerity and righteous life, yet the Lord was sad to tell him "you lack one thing." (Mk 10: 17 - 22)

Here was a remarkable young man, but he was lacking the most important qualification to be a true follower of Jesus Christ. He was too attached to his worldly possessions. To be used fruitfully for the Lord's work, we need to forsake the riches of this world and cling to Jesus' promise of "treasures in heaven."

King David, in Old Testament times, was an adulterer and murderer, but when he repented, God forgave him, and still called him a man after His own heart. (Acts 13: 22)

Why? Only because David had got his priorities right. He said: "One thing I have desired of the Lord, that I will seek after; That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in His temple (Ps 27: 4).

Let us take lessons from these episodes in the Holy Scriptures and make sure that we place ourselves in a position to be used mightily by the Lord, by getting our life priorities right.
