Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) can be a rewarding career choice. Not only do CNA jobs allow you to help people, but you can also enter into a healthcare career that is relatively recession-proof.

If you have considered being a Certified Nursing Assistant, it is important to ensure that you have the natural characteristics and skills to be successful. Here are a few elements to keep in mind as you explore CNA jobs.

Some of the skills and characteristics needed to become a successful CNA include:

* A CNA must like people. You interact on a very personal level with your patient, including dressing and toileting. You must naturally want to help people, no matter how difficult it may be.
* You must be able to lift, stretch, and bend to be a CNA. You are assisting people with transferring from the bed to the chair, the chair to the toilet, and the chair back to bed several times a shift for more than one patient. You must be able to accomplish these tasks without hurting your back.
* In CNA jobs, you must be able to assess a situation quickly and know when to call for help. If your patient is ill, having difficulty breathing, or experiencing any other health emergency, you must be able to think clearly and react quickly for the sake of your patient.
* You must be able to read and write well, as CNAs must document intake and output, as well

as activities on a patient record.
* You must be able to remain nonjudgmental and avoid prejudice when managing all types of people from different cultures and religious backgrounds. It is mandatory for a CNA to treat all patients equal and fairly, regardless of personal beliefs and values.
* CNA jobs require that you maintain a pleasant outlook. The daily grind of taking care of others mixed with your own personal life and stresses can lead to an unpleasant mood, which can reflect on the way you treat a patient or a co-worker. It is important to keep pleasant regardless of your own situation to provide the best care to the patient.

If you feel you have these attributes and are looking for a way to get into the health field quickly, being a CNA is an excellent way to go. CNA classes range from 6 weeks to 6 months, depending on where you decide to go. Some institutions may even train you on the job.

You may ask yourself how being a CNA first can lead you into future healthcare careers. The basics you learn in CNA courses are the groundwork needed to launch you into a more advanced degree in the healthcare field. You will use all of your basic training as a CNA to go onto nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, social work, or medical assistant careers. In addition, as a CNA, you will be earning money and gaining valuable experience along the way.
