There are many different dog breeds throughout the world. While many are popular, their names well-recognized, there are many more who are not only uncommon in name but rare in existence. Though it is impossible to list, let alone describe, all the rare breeds in this small article, here are a few you may not have run across.

Hopefully, it will help you become aware of some interesting and very wonderful breeds. As with all dogs, each breed is not compatible with everyone and for every environment. You need to do further research before you invest the time and money in purchasing a rare breed.

Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog

Also known as the Otto, this is a very rare breed of animal. It originated in an area of Southern Georgia in the United States of America. The first breeders were the Lanes of Rebecca, Georgia. The dog began as a plantation dog. It acted as a protector of both the family and the livestock. The Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog (ABBB) is a bulldog variety that weighs between 50 and 90 pounds. It possesses a coarse coat with a soft undercoat. The colors are blue, brindle, brown, buckskin, fawn, mahogany and red. Breeders do not crop the tail or ears.

The ABBB is a thinking, protective, but not overtly aggressive dog. This animal is friendly, loyal and docile towards family and friends alike.

Transylvanian Hound

The origins of this scent hound are Hungary. The Magyars bred hounds to Polish hounds and local breeds. The result was an intelligent, medium-sized animal of a gentle disposition. The dog is usually black and tan in coloring. The dog sports a short, dense coat. It weighs between 48 and 77 pounds.

An obedient dog, the Transylvanian Hound is known for its remarkable sense of direction and keen nose. The Magyars used the dog

for hunting large animals such as bear, boar, lynx, stag and wolf.

Canadian Eskimo or Inuit Dog

Also called the Qimmiq, the Canadian Eskimo dog has its origins in the northern regions of Canada. It has a thick, dense coat, perfect for its use as a sleigh and pack dog. It features in many of the early and famous expeditions in both the Antarctic and Arctic. A medium-size dog, although large for a sled animal, the Canadian Eskimo Dog is a beautiful animal. It weighs between 40 and 88 pounds. There is a significant difference in shape, size and weight between males and females.

Canadian Eskimo dogs are loyal animals. They are also brave, intelligent and tough. The dogs have a strong prey instinct that makes them strong hunters but also may affect their relationship with other pets in a household. The Canadian Eskimo Dog is currently regaining its popularity from the Alaskan Husky and Husky-mixed animals as sleigh dogs. Since 2000, this dog has been the animal symbol of the Canadian Territory of Nunavut. The Canadian Eskimo Dog is believed to be related to the Greenland Dog.
Azawakh

The Azawakh is an ancient breed orginating in Mali, Africa. Weighing between 33 and 55 pounds this short-backed, long-legged dog is both unswervingly loyal to its person and indifferent or aloof from anyone else. This is an adaptable animal, living as it has in the Sahara desert. The Azawakh is a guardian, a hunter and, among the tribes, particularly the Tamasheq, a status symbol. The dogs have attractive almond eyes and a range of coat colors. They are lean and graceful, making them attractive but particularly companion animals.

There are many more rare and unique breeds for you to discover. The above are a small sample, meant to wet your taste for learning more about the very wide world of dogs.
