Christmas ornaments decorations have really come a long way from their beginning. In the early 1800s, before ornaments were main stream, people would adorn their trees with fruits, paper streamers, small decorated presents, lace and pieces of metal. Even before Christmas balls and tassels, people still used these tools to create a beautiful display in celebration of the joyful holiday season.

As the popularity of decorations began to gain ground and spread all over the world, demand grew for more sophisticated ornaments. New ideas were inspired, and in the mid 1800's, the Germans began to create some incredibly beautiful glass blown ornaments. This grew out of already successful glass industries in Germany.

Parts of Germany were already making glass medicine bottles and glass eyes for dolls and window panes, so the transition for the up and coming demand for ornaments was not that difficult. German glassblowers soon became experts in designing hand-made, ornaments in the form of figurines and decorative shapes. These early Christmas decorations were very popular and held the market for quite some time.

Then, during the late 1800's, F.W. Woolworth, who was one the America's first mass merchandisers, saw that glass ornaments were in high demand and began to import them from Germany. He then began to sell them in his Five and Dime stores. During this time in American history, it is estimated that he was selling nearly $25 million dollars worth of glass Christmas ornaments decorations by the year 1890.

By the turn of the twentieth century most American and European countries were celebrating Christmas much the way we currently do.

People bought gifts for children, family, and friends, along with decorating their trees and homes. The focus of decorating was beginning to catch on, and the Christmas season was widely celebrated outward displays of cheer.

Christmas ornaments decorations were the ideal way for people to share their joy for the holiday season. Once the handmade glass ornaments started to take shape, the invention of mass production was implemented. Christmas ornaments decorations were being made in large quantities out of glass, but they were then hand painted and decorated. This saved a great deal of time, and it allowed for a much larger production output.

As time marched on, trends began to take shape. As the baby boomer generation came of age, there was quite a trend in commemorative ornaments. Limited edition pieces, even the invention of plastic, opened the doors wide open-allowing more intricate details on pieces. Now, you can find Christmas ornaments decorations in almost any shape and color. In more recent years, personalized ornaments have really become popular because they allow you to really tune in on a person's hobbies or milestones.

Not only are ornaments made to be decorations on your tree, but you can even find them with microchips that will play music, adding a beautiful aspect to your tree display. Recently, smoke detector ornaments have been used on trees to signal you if there happens to be a fire on your tree.

As technology continues to advance, it is only a matter of time before we see all sorts of new little ideas that make our Christmas trees even more attractive.
