The beauty of Twitter is that it is one of the fastest growing communities on the Internet today and it is one of the easiest communities to plug into. With a maximum of 140 characters per message, you cannot help but be short and sweet, so Twitter is a great tool for people who value their time.

But how exactly do you grow and network on Twitter? And how do you monetise that network?

Let's concentrate here on looking at how to grow your Twitter network.

First of all, let's not make networking more complicated than it needs to be. Networking is simply a way of making contact with a lot of people who want to exchange information with you. The keyword here is "exchange". It is a social process, which is why the term "social networking" is used for services such as Twitter, Facebook and so on.

One way to think about it is to imagine that social networking sites are places where people congregate and meet each other, just as if you were at a cafe, pub, bar or at someone's party. When you go to a party you do not take a megaphone and shout at everybody "VISIT MY SHOP!... VISIT MY SHOP!... VISIT MY SHOP!" Instead, you share information, ask questions, get to know each other, and perhaps exchange business cards.

It is not your immediate aim to do business at the party, but if you have made a good impression on the people you meet, and explain what you do, it may happen that they recommend you to someone in their network at a later date.

It is just the same with social networking on Twitter.com. Use your profile page as your business card. Post some information about yourself and what you do, and include a link back to your website.

When you post tweets, do not make everyone a blatant advertisement for your affiliate marketing program unless you want to be treated like a pub bore. Instead, give out some useful tips, some interesting insights about your specialty. Be helpful and generous. Be nice. Then, when you do post a promotional link, nobody



will object.

Also, don't feel that you have too tweet only about your business. Remember, when you are at social function, you don't want to perpetually talk shop. Internet marketing, and especially social networking, is all about building a brand around a personality, i.e., YOU.

Yet, the best way to do that is not to focus on yourself but on other people. If you are at a party, you would do that by circulating. On Twitter you do it by following other people. Following other people is the key to building your network on Twitter. So who do you follow?

1. Follow people who are entertaining, who share information and who link out to interesting websites. Even if there network is not very big it is likely to grow in the future and you will want to be able to plug into it.

2. Follow people who follow people. At the top of every Twitter page you will find information about the number of followers and the number of people being followed. Do not follow people who have a much larger number of followers that the people they follow. These people are kind of stingy and are unlikely to reciprocate when you follow them.

3. Find people via other search boxes. You can search for people by entering keywords related to your area of interest or field of expertise. This will help you to build up a solid network of people who may be interested in what you have to offer.

4. Use a service such as Twitter Grader which will generate a list of people whose profiles or areas of interest seemed to be similar to yours.

5. Go one level deeper and check out the people who are following the people who you are following. The click happy and follow all the people who appeal to you on the list.

You will find that many of the people you follow will be happy to reciprocate and follow you. So actively follow as many people as possible in order to build up a large network quickly and efficiently - and have fun at the same time.
