Allergy of the eyes is a common yet irritating problem leaving a person experience red, itchy or watery eyes. Though the cause could be a simple one, yet allergic eyes are a pain, hampering the daily working of a person. Besides the cold compress technique, there are various effective eye drops for treating the problem. These range from the simple over-the-counter allergy eye drops to the specific eye drops to treat the swelling, irritation and redness of the eye.

Redness of the Eye: This can be effectively treated with the decongestant allergy eye drops. A range of decongestant allergy eye drops like Visine can be used to alleviate the redness of the eyes. The usage of decongestant allergy eye drops should however be limited to three days. If the problem extends beyond that time, a specialist should be consulted to rule out any complications. Unabated use of decongestant eye drops can lead to the worsening of the redness, a condition known as conjunctivitis medicamentosa.

Swelling and Irritation: seasonal allergies or other reasons can attribute to the swelling or redness of the eyes, which can be effectively treated with the anti-inflammatory allergy eye drops. These are prescription drops and can be obtained only if recommended by a medical practitioner. Proper usage and frequency can treat the problem effectively,

but care should be taken with these eye drops as an overdose or incorrect method of intake can cause the cornea of the eye to be inflamed.

Other specific allergies of the eye can be treated with mast cell stabilizer allergy eye drops and antihistamines. These eye drops have the capability to limit or entirely stop the release of histamine, a chemical that is responsible for the symptoms that show up with seasonal allergies. Alamast and Alocril are two mast cell stabilizers that can be used as the season changes to avoid onset and then the worsening of the condition. The allergic symptoms of the eyes are significantly reduced by the repeated use of antihistamines.

Therefore, with the above mentioned allergy eye drops, the problem of redness, itchiness, and irritation of the eyes can be significantly reduced and to some extent, even it can be treated. However, any such problem if exists beyond three days must be checked out by an ophthalmologist to rule out any serious problems.

The key to save the eye from damage from allergens is to keep the eyes moistened. Tear substitutes can be used to prevent the allergens from damaging the conjunctiva. Physical trigger like rubbing the eyes can cause damage to the eyes and therefore one must not rub the eyes.
