The use of a storage unit can be very helpful to people that are in a transitional period or that just need some extra space. Located in every area of the country, storage units are relatively inexpensive and very convenient. Some facilities are temperature controlled or located within a structure. Others are outdoor structures that look much like a row of garage doors. All storage facilities provide gated access and security codes to ensure that your property is protected while on their property.

When using a storage facility, there are a few tricks to packing the units to make access to personal property safe and easy to access. While large items, such as furniture, are usually the last items to be removed from a structure, they should be the first items placed in the bin. Inevitably, items will need to be removed from the storage unit during the time it is there. It will be much easier if furniture does not have to be removed to access the items when needed.

Using uniform sized boxes helps pack the bin safely and will keep it organized. When using a variety of shapes and odd sizes the chance for a collapse of boxes greatly increases. Placing larger, heavier boxes near the bottom will ensure

that the stacks do not become top heavy and collapse. It is also recommended that the most frequently used items be placed in the front to avoid packing and repacking.

If the unit is not temperature controlled, take precaution when storing certain items. Linens, clothing and other material based goods can become damp or acquire a mildew smell. Place a box of damp rid in the storage unit to extract any excess water in the air. This is especially important in areas of the country where there is high humidity and a lot of rain. When storing books, it is wise to always place them up off the ground so that they do not become damaged by the weather. Items that can easily break should be stored near the front and near the top. This will allow these items to be the first removed when unpacked.

Always lock your bin. While the facility does provide a general security feature, such as gated access and high walls, items must be protected in the individual bins as well. This is the responsibility of the person renting the storage unit. Most facilities have a small shop in their office that sells locks and other security devices that can be used on the storage unit.
