Practice good hygiene in grooming your mare properly. Using circular smooth strokes remove dirt and debris from her coat with a grooming mitt or rubber currycomb. Use a dandy brush to remove stubborn grit and grime using long downward strokes. After having removed the majority of the dirt from the animal use a body brush to brush the body of your horse. If there is excess hair use a metal shedding blade to thin it out between body brush strokes. Use a soft body brush for your horses legs, be gentle so as not to bruise or scrape the
skin.
Grooming the mane can be a difficult task. Before brushing the mane, spray it with a detangler. Allow the detangler to set into the hair, afterwards work through it with a grooming comb be careful not to pull hair out in the procedure. Then, using a stiff body brush, comb the mane from underneath. Finish the mane by using a soft brush. The proper tools are a must for keeping your horses mane tidy and presentable. By grooming your horses mane regularly you will avoid the nasty problems of knots and matted hair.
You should have one grooming kit for each horse you keep so as to insure you do not spread any possible diseases or infections between horses. If you want to keep your horses clean, then you need to keep you grooming tools clean too. It is not very hard to clean your kit. Use a bucket of warm water with mild soap added and soak your brushes in it until you have removed all the built up debris. If you have wooden handled brushes you might not want to soak them for a prolonged period, instead you will have to work a bit to clean your brushes by hand. Now it is a simple matter of rinsing the soap and any leftovers away and letting the brushes dry. On a flat surface, lay the brushes bristle-side down and allow them to dry. Keeping you horse healthy and beautiful requires a bit of work on your part, but the right grooming tools make the job much easier and more enjoyable for both you and your horse.
