Your eyes are truly your window to the world and it benefits you to know some facts about how to keep your eyes healthy and some of the conditions that can cause impaired vision. Healthy eyes allow us to perform our daily tasks, such as reading the newspaper, driving a car, even walking across the street.

Vision problems have impeded individuals for as long as man can remember. The ancient Chinese were responsible for creating lenses to help correct vision problems. Taking care of your eyes is an important factor in retaining your eyesight throughout your life.

Eye problems can affect every part of the eye which is made up of the cornea, iris, lens, pupil and retina. The problems that affect the separate parts are caused by many different factors. The eye can become irregularly shaped and cause refractive errors. Cataracts plague many as they age, clouding their vision. Macular degeneration damage to the retina has become the leading reason for many people to lose their sight in the US.

Glaucoma is a disease that causes damage to the optic nerves, causing vision loss. Diabetics are often afflicted with glaucoma and with retinopathy. All of these causes of vision are able to be treated, though full restoration of sight is not always possible.

Dry eye can be a symptom of several of the diseases mentioned and can be easily treated with artificial tears, medication or by removing whatever is causing the condition. Fortunately, it is within your control when there are environmental factors that are causing your

eye discomfort. Removing some of these environmental factors will improve the problems you are experiencing with dry eye.

Dry eye can also be caused by factors that you do not have any control over. Heredity is one of these factors, along with air pollution, chemical fumes from paint or stains, and smoke. You can remove yourself from those areas, but you cannot realistically avoid all of the factors that contribute to dry eyes.

Appropriate eye care entails numerous aspects, such as standard eye exams, using sunglasses on a regular basis, avoiding injuring the eyes, putting on safety goggles, consuming a well-balanced diet and so forth. Amongst all these characteristics, a number of them are closely interrelated. Sunglasses can guard the eyes from damaging rays in the sunlight, whereas safety goggles are employed to prevent eye injuries in various hazardous places of work.

Dry eyes will happen when there are irritants that cause the eyes to react by not producing enough liquid to keep the moisture levels of the eyes at a normal level. When experiencing this condition, there are ways to address the issues with over the counter medications or removing the irritant. If the condition of dry eye continues over a period of time, you should be seen by a physician and get the problem corrected.

A truly persistent problem with dry eyes could be an indication that more serious matters are occurring, such as the development of an eye disease. The sooner this is seen to by a doctor, the sooner irreparable damage can be stopped.
