The liquid that is in our eyes that we identify as tears is essential to the health of our eyes. Besides keeping the surface of the eye moist, the tears are lubricants for our corneas. Individuals will experience itchy, aching, red eyes if there are not enough tears produced in the eyes. The lessened amount of liquid produced in the eyes can be the result of several factors.

When you're not producing enough tears, or liquid in your eyes, there are several over the counter eye drop solutions available. If this condition worsens or is consistently happening over an extended period of time, you should be seen by a doctor.

The cornea acts as the filter to the eye and keeps dust, debris and germs out of the sensitive eye area. The cornea is clear and is domed over the parts of your eye that filter the light into the interior, where the iris and pupil act like the lenses of a camera. Did you know that our eyes perceive objects upside down and our brain turns them back right side up? Nourishment is gained for the cornea through the tears in the eye. This liquid keeps the cornea healthy by protecting it from bacteria and viruses.

A healthy eye will produce an over abundance of tears when a foreign matter enters the eye. For individuals whose eyes do not produce those extra tears, there can be quite a lot of discomfort.
The eyes will feel like someone put sand in them. Even worse, if there is debris in the eye that can't be flushed out with tears, it is possible that the object in the eye could scratch the surface of the eye. This hurts! As we get older

our bodies reduce the amount of liquid that is produced. A condition that doctors simply characterise as 'dry eyes' happens and can result in permanent damage to the eye. Using over the counter drops for your eyes can be the solution to your problem of dry eyes.

There are quite a few other reasons the eyes might not produce enough tears. Some medications may reduce the amount of fluid that is produced in the eyes. Infections that block up the tear ducts can also cause dry eye. Using artificial tears is a great way to reduce the irritation in the eye itself. This extra lubrication could remove some of the pain and discomfort. As stated before, if this condition persists you should see a doctor. Do not wait until there is permanent damage before seeking a physician. Your eyesight is too precious to play the waiting game with.

Pollution is often the culprit for dry eyes. Again, eye drops can help relieve the irritation and other symptoms a person may experience. Allergies can also cause the dry eyes. Artificial lubricants can save a person's sight.

When your eyes do not produce enough tears to keep debris out and infections, then nature just needs a helping hand. There are treatments for many ailments and conditions concerning the eye. If there is a waiting period and your eye is feeling dry, irritated and super sensitive, contact your physician and use over the counter eye drops to get some relief. For those that are allergic to the pollen in the air, a bath is necessary to keep the eye lubricated enough to float the debris out. After a certain period, the tear duct itself will close up because of bacteria and viruses.
