You very well may know already that Mexican blankets are all unique, they come in a ton of different colors and styles, and they also make a great blanket for the beach. However, you may not be aware of all of the other uses that people are finding for these coverings, from wearing them to putting them up on walls. There are a lot of different ways to wear the blankets, and a lot of different reasons with a lot of different accessories to go with them. Toss a blanket over your shoulder and slap on a sombrero, and youre ready for a Mexican themed party.
As far as the sombreros go, they originally were used to shield field workers from the suns hot rays. Some believe the sombrero originated in the agricultural belt along what was to become the border between the United States and Mexico. The desert climate guaranteed many hours of sunlight beating down upon the heads, shoulders, and backs of Mestizo farmers and harvesters. Thus, someone began interweaving hats out of grass or any material available that reached out far enough to shade their neck, shoulders, and arms. The word sombrero comes from the Spanish word for shade, sombre.
However, today they are pretty much used in
the United States as novelty items and decorative items. They are also pretty inexpensive, unlike some of the more elaborate, truly authentic Mexican blankets. In fact, sombreros are usually cheap enough (depending on the quality) that many people purchase several of them to pass out at birthday parties and festivals. Did you know that they even make balloons for parties that are in the shape of a sombrero? We have yet to see a balloon shaped like a Mexican blanket, though.
All over the world in tropical places with hot sun rays beating down, you probably are going to be able to find the sombreros. You can find the blankets in several places too, especially in little shops throughout areas that are near beaches and on islands. What could be cooler on the beach than wearing a Mexican sombrero to shield your face from the sun while you are sitting on the hot sand on a beautiful blanket?
Well, dont stop there on the beach with sitting on the blanket, hang it up! There are tons of people these days who are using these Mexican blankets as decorative wall coverings, table coverings, draping over the backs of sofas, and even as rugs, so get creative!
