Good dental nutrition depends on a balanced diet. A balanced diet boosts the body's immune system, helps prevent oral disease.

A balanced diet also supplies the body with the necessary nutrients that maintain strong teeth and healthy gums.

Starches and sweets should be combined when at all possible. This will stimulate saliva production. Dessert should therefore be eaten prior to a meal, never sometime afterwards.

The American Dental Association also states that good dental nutrition includes breads and cereals for vitamins that teeth need to grow. Dairy products contain calcium and Vitamin D. Vitamin C comes from fruits and vegetables.

Good dental nutrition also includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. Dentists and MD's alike advise patients to moderate their protein intake?particularly from fatty, red meat. Many Americans eat far too much meat.

Complex carbohydrates are also necessary, along with low-fat dairy products and unsaturated fats.

When food intake is balanced in this manner, it assists in the removal of plaque. By removing plaque, it consequently helps prevent cavities from forming. remove plaque and prevent cavities from forming.

Patients are advised to avoid processed sugar as much as possible. The best sugars, if one wants sugar, are the ones found in milk and raw fruits.

This brings us to soft drinks. There really is nothing good about a soft drink, and it is better for a person never to drink one at all. However, these drinks are so popular that many people insist on using them as stimulants.

In this case, a person should strictly limit

his or her soda intake. This is because one 12-ounce can of soda contains approximately 12 teaspoons of sugar. Soft drinks also contain acids that dissolve tooth enamel.

Dental nutrition also involves a certain sense of timing. When a person eats has a direct impact on his or her health. Every time a person eats a sweet or starchy food, mouth bacteria have an unlimited food supply and begin to produce acid that attacks the teeth for 20 minutes or more.

Saliva eventually neutralizes these acids and repairs tooth enamel. However when eating constantly, saliva production is slowed down, so there will not be enough in the mouth to neutralize all of the bacteria before they have done their damage.

Good dental nutrition demands plenty healthy water intake. Saliva production depends on hydration

Patients should avoid any food that sticks to teeth. Nuts, raw vegetables, cheeses, and plain yogurts are preferable to cake, candy, or dried, sweetened fruit mixes.

It is also advised that patients avoid any fermentable carbohydrates such as cookies, chips, or crackers, as standalone snacks. These food items should be combined with other food items, or even better, be eaten as part of a full meal.

For example, eating cheese with crackers is always better than munching on crackers alone. Not only does it taste better, it is better for teeth because it will help food neutralize mouth acids and prevents tooth decay.

Finally, people should always brush their teeth after every meal, and they should floss as directed by their dentist
