The dictionary definition of an archive is: documents or records relating to activities, business dealings, etc. of a person, family, corporation, association, community or nation. Archives are important parts of history, many historical events that have been lost to time, have been rediscovered due to the meticulous archival of family records, letters, pictures, and other personal memorabilia. Where would your family history be if there were no written accounts of what happened, who was born, who died, and where they laid down roots?

A family archive is a record of those things that occurred in your family that make your family what it is today. Your grandfather loves to regale you with stories of what it was like growing up on a goat farm. He spoke of getting up before the sun, spending hours feeding the animals, performing farm chores, and running amok in the woods behind the barn. Life was simpler then, and all of those stories and events were written down and memorialized in your family archive. Now, when your kids want to know the stories of your grandfather, you can bring out the family archive, sit down with them, and bring a smile to their faces with the stories you loved as a child.

Creating and maintaining a

family archive isnt as difficult as you would think. It does take a lot of time, and detailed work, but the end result is something that you can cherish and share with further generations, for years and years. If you dont have the time and the attention to detail required for building a family archive, you can hire someone to do it for you. There are professional archivists that make a living delving into the past and putting it all down on paper.

If you want to hire someone to build your family archive, look for someone who you can trust with family history. This means that you dont want to bring someone into the circle of your family, share your family secrets and history with them, and watch them race away to the nearest tabloid to spill information about your loved ones that you would rather have kept in the family.

Choose an archivist that is trustworthy, detail oriented, creative, and has plenty of time to dedicate to your project, or you can build your family archive yourself. Either way, building a family archive is a precious undertaking that is worth it.
Building a family archive is creating a memory vault that holds and protects those memories you hold dear.
