Pune the cultural capital of Maharashtra State is also known as the Oxford of the East. The city does not exhibits cosmopolitan features as Mumbai or Delhi does but it is a great getaway destination to spend your weekend with amusement and excitement. This beautiful city is located at the western end of the Deccan Plateau. The city is located at the point of amalgamation of two rivers namely Mula and Mutha.

Previously the city was known as Punavadi or Poona. It derived its name from a Sanskrit word 'Punya Nagari' that means 'the city of Virtuous deeds'. Initially, the city was established as an agricultural settlement around eighth century. The area used to be ruled by the Rashtrakutas but later on during eleventh century, Mughals took charge of the city.

This city exhibits the perfect amalgamation of tradition bound values with modern industrial culture. It is one of the fastest growing cities in India as it has becoming the center of headquarters for most of the IT and manufacturing companies. Pune has also considered as an important educational center of the country with several prominent educational institutes such as Pune University, Armed Force Medical College, Film and Television Institute of India, College of Military Engineering with the most important National Defense Academy. It is also home to over hundred educational institutions and nine universities.

Pune has become one of the major tourist destinations for the visitors looking to explore the western region of the country. It exhibits some of the most historically significant sites and monuments. Some of the most sought after tourist



places include Agakhan Palace, Shaniswar Wada, Pataleshwar Cave Temple with some interesting museums such as Raja Denkar Kelkar Museum. Osho Commune International is another place that the guest of the city would never wish to miss.

Agakhan Palace - has always remained at the top of the list of attractions in Pune. The palace is a perfect example of architectural excellence. It is situated right amidst the lush green garden from all sides. Pataleshwar Cave Temple - is a heritage temple for the people of Pune and is dedicated to Lord Pataleshwar. The most fascinating thing about this temple that makes it different from other temples is its elegant rock-cut architecture. The architecture of temple was based on the architecture of Elephanta Caves.

One can also visit a nearby temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This is a must visit temple if you are visiting Pataleshwar Temple.

Osho Commune International is a one of the largest institutions dedicated to meditation and personal development. This beautiful ashram is situated away from the city at Koregaon Park that is just fifteen minutes away from Mumbai by air. The commune was established by Rajneesh popularly known as Osho. It is a perfect place to understand yourself and the system of inner healing.
