Patiala is a vibrant and exciting city of Punjab. It exhibits the royal heritage with its rich culture and traditions. The city of Patiala was founded by Baba Ala Singh in the year 1764. Patiala has secured a very crucial and significant position in social, political, arts, cultural and military field.
This lively city is located in the south-eastern part of Punjab. The city was the capital of the former Punjab of British India. Patiala is famous for its peg, paranda, pagri and Jutti. If you are a drinker and if you are in India or you are drinking with an Indian then you would have certainly came across with the world 'Patiala peg'. The word 'Patiala peg' is used for alcohol when served double than the normal serving or unexpectedly large.
The entire city of Patiala is full packed with a range of beautiful and majestic palaces, forts and gardens. It also exhibits some popular must visit places located in and around the city. Some of the most historically significant sites include Qila Mubarak fort, Moti Bagh Palace, Darbar Hall, Lachman Jhoola, Kali temple etc.
Qila Mubarak is an important and impressive structure situated right amidst the heart of Patiala City. This marvelous building had been constructed by Maharaja Ala Singh as a mud fort initially. Later on the building was built into an extensive double storied structure. The fort can be broadly divided into two main portions viz. Quila Androon and Quila Mubarak. The fort also accommodates a great and must visit museum of weapons and chandeliers used by royal families at old times. The Palace of Colors and The Palace of the Moon also exist with the
Moti Palace, Sheesh Palace and the Rajmata Palace that are well known apartments and elegantly furnished and decorated. The outstanding design and modern architecture of the palace make it one of the most distinctive factors of the city.
Sheesh Mahal or The Palace of Mirror is one of the most exciting and must visit attractions of Patiala. This extraordinary structure was built by Maharaja Narinder Singh in the year 1845. He was widely known as one of the greatest patron of art. The palace exhibits a perfect example of European and Mughal architecture.
In order to decorate the palace, almost all possible murals and mirror-work have been used. Sheesh Mahal also houses a wonderful museum. It houses a very interesting collection of antiques and relics that give the visitors an opportunity to insight the life and time of Maharaja of Patiala.
Lachman Jhoola is another not to miss attraction of the city which is a suspension bridge established across the small lake right in front of Sheesh Mahal. The design of the bridge has taken from the world famous Lakshman Jhoola built at Rishikesh. The bridge acts as a linkage between Sheesh Mahal and Banasar Ghar that is also a major public attraction.
The City of Patiala is also famous for its lively and unique style of celebrating festivals. The Patiala Heritage Festival is one of the most exciting and watchful festivals of the city. This festival has been started by the Patiala Heritage Society in the year 2003 and it takes place in the month of February every year. This is one of the great festivals of Patiala as it displays several different aspects of music, arts and sporting culture.
