Leave Early
When someone has to be to work by a specific time, it is always wise to leave home early. There is less stress and, as a result, fewer distractions while driving when the Ontario commuter is not under pressure to hurry. When there are extra traffic problems, the commuter will not have to drive aggressively to get to work on time. For distance commuters, adding in an extra cusion to pass through the usual trouble spots and allowing extra time for an unexpected slow-down will reduce the need to hurry when traffic is moving at a more comfortable pace or when battling for a convenient parking space is a daily necessity.

Take a Safe Route
The shortest route is not always the fastest or the safest. Try a number of alternative paths, and determine the best one for commuting each day. Select a convenient alternate, just in case it is needed. Travelling on congested roadways increases the risk of having an accident. Driving an alternate route on streets with little traffic is less hazardous. Avoid dangerous neighborhoods and those high in pedestrian use when possible.

Fuel
Keep quality fuel in the tank at

all times. Use at least the minimum octane recommended by the manufacturer. Allowing the vehicle to run out of fuel causes two problems. Any sediment in the bottom of the fuel tank can be dispersed into the engine as it reaches empty. Secondly, walking down a roadway increases the risk of being hit by passing vehicles or being approached by unsavory characters while on foot. Take note of the locations of gas stations nearest the home and office, as well as those located conveniently near highways exits.

Maintenance
Regularly check the basic fluid levels to avoid problems. Check oil, antifreeze brake fluid, tire air pressure and windshield washer fluid. Check tires for wear and rotate them on a regular basis to increase their lifespan.

Speed Limit
Maintaining the speed limit is the most common sense driving behavior a person can follow to avoid accidents and incidents, especially while commuting from home to office in Ontario. The speed limit is posted for safety reasons. This enables the driver to stop in the event of a road hazard or to maintain a safe turning speed. Traffic signals should be obeyed, as well, to prevent collisions.
